The thoughts we entertain (things we dwell on) influence our actions/behavior. This can be in a positive context, or a negative one, depending on what it is we dwell on. With regard to the negative influence, I'm not entirely sure if this is giving ones self over to external spiritual forces, so much as simply giving in to apathy. Messiah said "I and the Father are in one accord", and "I was sent only to do the will of the Father". Essentially Messiah was meditating on Torah. What are you meditating on most of the time... honestly. And while our character is a reflection of our thoughts, our actions (or lack of action) can, and inevitably will, influence our thoughts. It's a chicken or the egg scenario. It's a very complicated situation, especially when we're mired in a chaotic world of conflicting ideologies. Scripture speaks often and loudly to the method and model for overcoming internal or external influences. Obedience is the key. Practice it at the smallest levels. Do we even obey our own superficial code of conduct? How can we pursue a higher standard of character if we can't even be true to our fallen nature? Obedience to lesser truth is required to possess obedience to greater Truth. The lies about our obedience that we accept not only shape a faulty foundation, but become a ritual in a religion of self worship. Be a slave to Truth, and obey that Truth. Obedience is humility, discipline, and dedication. This is the definition of Love.

For this is the love of Yah, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. -1 John 5:3

But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of Yah and keep it!” -Luke 11:28

And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him - Hebrews 5:9

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. - John15:10

And whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. -1 John 3:22

And Samuel said, “Has the Father as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Father? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. -1 Samuel 15:22

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of Yah, and take every thought captive to obey Messiah -2 Corinthians 10:5

You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. -James 2:24
